EDWARD PERKS
PORTFOLIO MANAGER
FRANKLIN CONVERTIBLE SECURITIES FUND

800-342-5236

real audio - 28.8k

Name?Edward Perks
How long has he been at this job?Ed has been managing the Franklin Convertible Securities Fund since December of 1998. Since his arrival, he has changed the investment strategy of the fund adding more balanced convertibles to its portfolio. Because not all convertibles are alike, the attractiveness of balanced convertibles is that they offer both income and the opportunity for equity-like returns while other convertibles may offer more bon-like or equity-like returns.
How has the fund performed?Nicely. Through January 31, the fund was up 7.2 percent. In 2000, its total return was up 15.36 percent placing it at the top of the performance heap for all convertible funds, according to Lipper, Inc. In 1999, the fund was ahead 21.16 percent.
Anything interesting about him?Of course. Ed likes to travel, play golf, fish and just plain enjoy the outdoors. "My father-in-law has done a great job of getting me hooked on fly-fishing. All catch and release. There is nothing quite like getting up early on a Saturday morning, driving up to northern California and wading in a river in the middle of nowhere."
When was the interview conducted?January 25, 2001
